The very nature of liturgy demands that all Catholics be led to full, conscious, and active participation. Music is an integral part of the solemn liturgy. Yet who leads the music?
Our churches deserve liturgical musicians who are passionate about leading well, and who are well formed - educationally, mentally, and spiritually - to be entrusted with this sacred duty. Yet, fewer universities across the United States are offering liturgy and liturgical music as viable fields of study, thus leading to a depleted pool of competent liturgical musicians. In addition, budgetary concerns and conflicting understandings of the music minister's role has decreased local opportunities for full-time employment in this vital ministry, further derailing the pool of potential talent. Churches across the US have indicated that one of their greatest challenges is finding qualified ministers to serve as directors of liturgy and music.
We are determined to improve the situation! To that end, Bob Soeder, through St. Mary Magdalene Church, has developed an Apprenticeship Program for those who desire employment in the field of liturgical music ministry. With a program customized to the candidate, the goal is to help form well-rounded liturgical musicians who are enabled to make an immediate positive impact in parish ministry.
